Committee
Overview
General Principal of Committees
Form Follows Function
Decide on your programs (function), then determine your committees (form)
Why have committees?
1. To divide the workload.
2. To keep board meeting to a reasonable length and scope.
3 To develop (or utilize) expertise of various members.
4. To permit decision-making between meetings of the full board.
5. To facilitate learning and satisfaction for members.
Committees are formed for specific purposes:
- Relating to purpose, goals and action plans of the organization.
- Developed around one particular function, issue or area, i.e. personnel.
- The board's source of specialized expertise and knowledge in that subject,
i.e. finance.
Committees may be:
- Standing -- permanent.
- Ad hoc -- temporary.
Who may serve on committees?
- Board members, other members of the program or organization, staff members,
interested individuals from the community-at-large.
- The board chair is an ex-officio member of all committees, and is free
to attend all committee meetings, but should not feel obligated to do
so.
